The Institute of Geomatics invites applications for a
PhD fellowship
for the
Active Remote Sensing Unit
(Reference TA-2010-07-26 -PhD)

1. Description of position

Function: PhD. fellowship for the "Active Remote Sensing" Unit in order to prepare a doctoral thesis
Reporting: To the Head of the Unit
Duration: Four years

2. Functions and activities:
• Processing and analysis of data coming from different satellite-based and terrestrial sensors.
• Tasks of research and development.
• Participation in measurement experimental campaigns.
• Involvement on the research projects of the Unit.
3. The Institute of Geomatics

The Institute of Geomatics is a non-profit public consortium of the autonomous Government of Catalonia (GC) and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). It was created by law of the GC in 1997 and its mission is to promote and develop geomatics, through applied research and education, for the general benefit of society.

The Institute of Geomatics is organized along modern academic management principles. It integrates a friendly and motivating research atmosphere together with scientific, technical and administrative rigor. We practice the knowledge triangle of research, innovation and education. We measure our performance. We trust and respect people.

4. The Active Remote Sensing Unit (TA)

The Active Remote Sensing unit has the objective to carry out research related to the generation and analysis of spaceborne, airborne and ground-based data and to develop thereof scientific and technical applications. As its name indicates, the activities of the TA unit are related to active sensor types, as for example Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Laser Scanners. Nevertheless, TA has experience with passive sensors that produce for instance optical images.

From the applications point of view TA is highly specialized in the measurement and monitoring of deformations. In addition the unit's curriculum includes works in other applications like Digital Terrain Model generation among others. These are the fundamental research areas of the TA unit:
• Algorithms and analysis methods: interferometric SAR (InSAR), differential interferometric SAR (DInSAR) and terrestrial SAR,
• Measurement of deformations with DInSAR, with emphasis on topics related to the evaluation of the quality of measurements and the validation of DInSAR techniques,
• Terrestrial active remote sensing techniques: laser scanner and terrestrial SAR.
• Analysis of Airborne laser scanner (LiDAR) data.
5. Candidate profile
• Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or any other equivalent background or professional experience that qualifies the candidate for the specific functions and activities described above.

• Strong motivation for research activities.
• Fluent communication in English.
• High level of proactive, initiative working, responsibility, teamwork.
• Previous academic or work experience in geomatics, a general solid background in technology and/or research, contacts to key actors in the geomatics R+D environment like ESA, European Commission, companies and other organizations of the sector are an asset.
• Very good knowledge in C or C++ programming languages (IDL would be an asset).
• Driving license B1.
6. Conditions of the fellowship
• The general conditions and norms for the IG pre-doctoral fellowship program apply to all aspects of the present call and its implementation.
• The fellowship is offered for a period of one year, and it is renewable up to a total of four years.
• In order to renew yearly the fellowship the PhD fellow has to demonstrate an adequate progress of his/her academic and research activities.
7. Selection procedure

The selection procedure includes the steps detailed below.
• Evaluation procedure
The evaluation procedure includes a first screening of the received applications by competent researchers of the IG, based on technical and scientific potential. The results of this first evaluation stage will be notified to each candidate within one week after the submission deadline. Those candidates selected in the first stage will then be contacted by the IG personnel to coordinate the second stage evaluation. At this stage the selection procedure may involve a personal interview where cooperative skills and scientific vision may be evaluated. The final results of the selection will be communicated to all remaining candidates no later than one month after the submission deadline.
• Procedure after selection
- After the communication of the selection results, the selected candidate has two weeks to accept the PhD fellowship. Not acceptance may allow access to the fellowship for the next best pre-selected candidate or, where necessary, may cause a new call for applications.
- Following, the selected candidate and IG agree on the starting date of the PhD fellowship, and cooperate in the following steps:
- Visa application process (if applicable),
- Other administrative accomplishments necessary before arriving to IG,
- Collecting the documentation needed to enrol in a doctorate programme.

----------------
Información complementaria de la oferta:
Applications shall contain:
• a cover letter (including the description of the motivation to pursue a PhD in Geomatics),
• a detailed candidate's CV (including a full contact address and e-mail),
• scanned copies of passport and university degree,
• a reference letter.
The required documentation shall be sent by 5th September 2010 to marta.agudo@ideg.es (project management and planning).

Please mention the reference number (TA-2010-07-26 -PhD) in the e-mail subject.
