Copyright: Commissioner Barnier welcomes agreement on greater access to books for the visually impaired

(14 September 2010)Michel Barnier, European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services, presided today over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on access to works for dyslexic or visually impaired readers The signing of this Memorandum marks an important and concrete step to increase the number of books that visually impaired persons can enjoy for study or leisure. The agreement outlines a system whereby works in accessible formats, such as Braille and audio books, can be much more easily distributed across the EU Member States. It is hoped that noticeable increases in cross-border distribution will be possible within a year. The Memorandum of Understanding is an important step in realising one of the objectives of the Digital Agenda for Europe, namely enabling people with disabilities to gain full access to the benefits of the digital society.

Digital Agenda: Commission measures to deliver fast and ultra-fast broadband in Europe – what would they do for me?

(20 September 2010)Giving all European citizens and businesses access to a fast and ultra-fast broadband internet connection is one of the key objectives of the Digital Agenda for Europe, the EU's plan to maximise the social and economic impact of Information and Communication Technologies, and the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. The measures presented today set out a common regulatory approach for access to new high-speed fibre networks, propose a 5-year policy programme for radio spectrum to ensure, inter alia, that spectrum is available for wireless broadband and outline how best to encourage private and public investment in fast and ultra-fast broadband networks. Practical examples of exactly how the measures stand to benefit people and businesses are outlined below.

Join the most "eInclusive" pan-European online network

(21 September 2010)Become a member of the ePractice ADD ME! Community and join a pan European Network to support people digitally excluded or in danger of exclusion to use public and local services via Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). ADD ME! aims to enlist organisations (Public Administration Institutions, NGOs, Civic Organisations and Centres, Agencies, Volunteering groups and other offline and online entities such as networks, blogs, etc.), which are active in the field of social care, assistance and enhancement of vulnerable social groups such as the elderly, pensioners, youth, disabled, immigrants, poor, etc. ADD ME! (Activating Drivers for Digital eMpowerment in Europe) project is an inclusive EGovernment initiative funded under the ICT Policy Support Programme.

odt2braille v0.0.2 released

(21 September 2010)The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven) has released a freeware for OpenOffice.org Writer that enables users to save documents as Braille or to send them directly to a Braille embosser. odt2braille is being developed in the context of the FP7 AEGIS project. The AEGIS project develops software for persons with disabilities, covering the desktop platform, the Web ("Rich Internet Applications", i.e. web-based applications that provide user interfaces and functionality that were formerly only available on the desktop) and mobile devices.

Open Days 2010: Competitiveness, co-operation and cohesion for all regions

The 8th Open Days will be held between 4 and 7 October 2010, a period during which the debate on the European Union's '2020' agenda, its policies and future budget, will be in full swing. Regions and cities will play a major role in the discussions on 'EU2020' agenda, on the budget review, and on the future of EU cohesion policy post-2013. The Open Days are an ideal framework for them to showcase good practice in the field of strengthening regional competitiveness, territorial co-operation and social and economic cohesion, to share experiences with others and to impact on the political debates among EU institutions and Member States. In 2010, the Open Days will concentrate on 'competitiveness, co-operation and cohesion'. Please note the session on "Ageing and persons with disabilities – turning the challenge into opportunities through regional innovation with ICT and accessibility measures" (session 07C26).

"AccessibleTV 2010" workshop

The FP7 project GUIDE (Gentle user interfaces for elderly people) started at the beginning of this year. It aims to fulfill the individual accessibility needs of elderly users with mild impairments through the provision of a development toolbox for personalized, adaptive multimodal user interfaces. It is organising a one day workshop to underline and discuss various aspects of the project.
