Preparation of pilot European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing – Follow live the stakeholder event of 26 November via web-streaming

(10 November 2010) The European Commission is organising a stakeholder conference to prepare a proposal for a pilot European Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing, which will take place on 26 November in Brussels, starting at 10am. The conference can be followed via web-streaming at this link: http://scic.ec.europa.eu/str/index.php?sessionno=e0ab531ec312161511493b002f9be2ee. The intention to prepare a pilot partnership was announced in the EU's "Innovation Union" flagship initiative, part of the Europe 2020 strategy. The proposed aim of a pilot partnership on active and healthy ageing is, by 2020, to enable citizens to live longer actively, independently and in good health by increasing the average number of healthy life years by two. This pilot partnership would build on coherent and integrated, stakeholder-led, citizen-centred and innovation–driven actions. The event is the first opportunity for stakeholder representatives to discuss their ideas and concrete actions for the partnership.

Creating a barrier-free Europe: European Commission seeks better access for 80 million people with disabilities

(15 November 2010) Most people take it for granted that they can hop on a bus to go shopping, surf the Internet or enjoy a television series. But for the 80 million Europeans with a disability, there may be major obstacles that put these activities out of reach. The European Commission today adopted a new strategy to break down these barriers. The plan outlines how the EU and national governments can empower people with disabilities so they can enjoy their rights. Specific measures over the next decade range from the mutual recognition of national disability cards, the promotion of standardisation to a more targeted use of public procurement and state aid rules. These measures will have substantial societal benefits, but should also produce a knock-on effect on Europe's economy. They could for example enhance the EU market for assisted devices and services, which already today has an estimated annual value of over €30 billion. The Commission will also consider whether to propose a "European Accessibility Act" by 2012 to further develop the Single Market for accessible products and services.

First Pan-European VERITAS Workshop and User Forum

29 November 2010 - 30 November 2010 Prague, Czech Republic

Ensuring that all products developed in the car, home, work, healthcare and entertainment industry are accessible and designed for all, lies at the core of the VERITAS project (FP7). Through the development of virtual user models that can be inserted in simulation environments, any design elements that cause barriers for the beneficiaries (people with disabilities and older people) can be detected at the very beginning, thus allowing the designers to improve their initial design and make it inclusive. The User Forum aims to bring together on the one hand the developers and designers, and on the other hand the beneficiaries of the developed products and services.
