PRESS RELEASE
Results of EU Culture Council, Brussels, 18 November

(18 November 2010) Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, warmly welcomed the adoption by the EU's Council of Culture Ministers of the EU Culture work plan for 2011-2014. For her part, Neelie Kroes, Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda, underlined to Ministers the very considerable opportunities new technologies can bring to the creative and content industries, as identified in the Digital Agenda for Europe. The Reflection Group ('Comite des Sages') on bringing Europe's cultural heritage online, who are due to finalise their report at the beginning of 2011, held an exchange of views over lunch with Ministers, Commissioner Vassiliou and Vice-President Kroes. The Council adopted conclusions on European film heritage, on European cinema in the digital era and on the role of culture in combating poverty and social exclusion.

Europeana gives online access to over 14 million examples of Europe's cultural heritage

(18 November 2010) Anyone in the world can now access over 14 million digitised books, maps, photographs, paintings, film and music clips from cultural institutions across Europe through Europe's digital library Europeana. Launched in 2008 with two million objects, Europeana has already passed the initial target for 2010 of 10 million objects. Today, the Reflection Group ("Comite des Sages" - Maurice Levy, Elisabeth Niggemann, Jacques de Decker) set up by the Commission to explore new ways to bring Europe's cultural heritage online is addressing the EU's Council of Culture Ministers and the European Parliament's Committee on Culture. The Comite des Sages' report is due to be published at the beginning of 2011.

PRESS RELEASE
Expert group evaluates 7th Framework Programme

(18 November 2010) The Interim Evaluation of the European Union's 7th Framework Programme for Research has now been completed. The work was carried out by a Group of Experts chaired by Rolf Annerberg, Director General of the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Research and Spatial Planning (FORMAS), which presented its report to the EU Commissioner for Research Maire Geoghegan-Quinn. The Commission is analysing the report in detail and will respond in the weeks to come.

European Commission makes final call to 14 Member States to activate missing children hotline 116 000

(17 November 2010) The European Commission today made a final call to 14 EU Member States to make the Europe-wide 116 000 hotline for missing children operational as soon as possible. The hotline provides a single number for missing children and their parents to call for help anywhere in the EU. Having the same hotline will help children and parents in trouble get help when away from home, such as during family holidays. In a report adopted today, the Commission takes stock of the situation in the Member States, proposes common minimum quality requirements for the service throughout the EU and gives Member States a last chance to make the hotline operational before considering legislative measures.

Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council, 18-19 November

(17 November 2010) At this Council meeting, Neelie Kroes, Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda, will underline to Ministers the very considerable opportunities new technologies can bring to the creative and content industries, as identified in the Digital Agenda for Europe. The Reflection Group ('Comite des Sages') on bringing Europe's cultural heritage online will have an exchange of views with Ministers before they finalise their report, due at the beginning of 2011. Vice-President Kroes will urge the reflection group to come up with ambitious recommendations to, inter alia, make it easier for cultural institutions to digitise their collections and give access to them through the European portal Europeana. The meeting, gathering Ministers from the 27 EU Member States, will also adopt conclusions on European film heritage and on European cinema in the digital era and discuss the EU's role in the fight against doping in sporting competitions.

This conference aims to address the main issues of concern within the Information Society, both technical as well as non-technical. European Conference on eGovernment - Final Call for Papers

As governments seek to remodel and restyle their services, e-Government continues to arouse interest and attention. New dynamic issues such as e-democracy, e-citizenship, e-Identity and e-voting have become core elements in the development of public sector delivery. The organisers of the event have launched a final call for papers that is open until 25 November 2010. Case studies and work-in-progress/posters are welcomed approaches. PhD Research, proposals for roundtable discussions, non-academic contributions and product demonstrations based on the main themes are also invited.

Workshop on EU Social Networks and EU Research and Innovation Programmes

26 November 2010 Brussels, Belgium

Fifteen EU-based Social Networks, accounting for more than 200 million registered users, will discuss with the European Commission their wishes for the future in terms of research and innovation. From the supply side, research organisations, academia and ICT industry will respond with their idea about how their expertise can contribute. This workshop will allow all these stakeholders to meet together at EU level, and feed into the European Commission's efforts to identify the conditions necessary to increase of the competitiveness of EU industry on the web, one of the objectives of the Digital Agenda for Europe . The workshop will also discuss the work being done by several EU Social Networks to establish a group which would enable their voice to be heard more consistently across Europe. Participation is free of charge, but prior registration is required.

Information and Networking day: "SME initiative on Digital Content"

In preparation of the upcoming FP7 Call on this objective, the European Commission is organising this Information and Networking day. The purpose of the event is to inform and assist prospective proposers, especially SME, preparing project proposals, to facilitate sharing of ideas and experiences. It will give participants the chance to network, to find partners for their projects and get feedback on proposed ideas from officials of the European Commission.

Final Public Workshop of the Oxford Internet Institute Study on Future Internet

The European Commission has launched in 2009 a Study on "Towards a Future Internet: Interrelations between Technological, Social and Economic Aspects". Building on an online survey and several multidisciplinary workshops held in Brussels, at MIT in Boston and in Tokyo, the final findings, touching on the infrastructure, policy and regulatory aspects of the Future Internet and their societal and economic impact, will be presented and discussed during this workshop. Registration is free of charge but compulsory.

Tensions between Intellectual Property Rights and the ICT standardisation process: reasons and remedies

Key ICT standards are perceived by many as critical technology platforms with a strong public interest dimension. However, concerns are voiced that Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and their exclusivity potential, may hinder or prevent standardisation. The European Commission and the European Patent Office (EPO) are organising a conference to address some specific issues on patents and ICT standards: are today's IPR features still compatible with fast moving markets and the very complex requirements of ICT standardisation in a global knowledge economy environment? Where are problems that we can we fix?

ISI General Assembly & SatCom Day

The Integral Satcom Initiative (ISI) is the European Technology Platform on Satellite Communications, whose membership embraces major part of relevant private and public stakeholders from Satellite Communications (SatCom) and Space sector in Europe. During the General Assembly, representatives from industry and academia of the Satellite Communications (SatCom) sector will discuss selected activities of the ISI Working Groups and the Steering Council on the SatCom industry sector, including the preparation of future collaborative research. The event provides networking opportunities for the preparation of new research consortia for upcoming FP7 ICT, Space and Security calls. The SatCom Day is gathering high profile key note speakers and panelists on the following topics: Why next generation SatCom should be considered in the digital agenda EC objective? How can SatComs contribute to the European space policy and in particular security ? The ESA experience in the funding of Satellite systems in an institutional context.
