- European Innovation Partnership agrees on actions to turn ageing into an opportunity

(7 November 2011) The Steering Group of the pilot European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing has agreed on joint actions in response to the societal challenge of an ageing European population. The Group is made up of people from the health and social sectors, businesses, civil society to public authorities. In today's Strategic Implementation Plan, the Group sets out priority actions to meet the challenge of ageing through innovation. The overarching objective is to ensure that the average European citizen has two more active and healthy years to live by 2020. The implementation plan is the first step towards that objective, and focuses on three main areas of life events: prevention, care and cure, and independent living.

- Online survey on immigrants and information and communication technologies

(8 November 2011) A research project funded by the European Commission has launched an online survey to see how immmigrants use new information and communication technologies. Participants are asked how they use the Internet and mobile phones to talk with friends, to find information, to get a job, and to participate in the local community and wider society. The survey takes 15 minutes to complete, and one in ten respondents will receive 15 minutes of free phone calls as a reward.

- Research project to predict and prevent falls in the ageing society launched

(9 November 2011) The EU-funded research project iStoppFalls (ICT based System to Predict and Prevent Falls) started on 1 October 2011. The aim of iStoppFalls consists of developing ICT-based technologies which can be easily integrated in the daily life practices of older people who live alone and which allow for continuous training, reliable fall risk assessment, and appropriate feed-back, based on discreet measuring technologies and adaptive assistance functions. The research project will be funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) and the Australian Government with more than €3 million altogether.

- Call for proposals for social experimentations - Progress 2011

(Deadline: 15/12/2011) PROGRESS is the EU's employment and social solidarity programme set up to provide financial support for the attainment of the European Union's objectives in employment, social affairs and equal opportunities. Through this call for proposals on social experimentation, PROGRESS countries embarking on welfare reforms are offered financial support to experiment the envisaged policy changes and reforms before implementing them, if successful, on a wide scale. This will entail small scale testing, on the basis of rigorous evaluation methodology, of envisaged reforms in those Member States that choose to benefit from this support opportunity. At the present juncture this would often be related to reviews of social spending as part of austerity packages. Selected projects have to contribute to developing and testing socially innovative approaches to policy priorities in the context of the Europe 2020 Strategy and the Open Method of Coordination on social protection and social inclusion. To be selected under this call, projects should focus on either of the following selected themes, keeping in mind in all cases the gender dimension of the issue: • Social inclusion of vulnerable groups; • Quality of childcare services; • Active and healthy ageing; • Transition from education to work for the youth.

- DART (Declining, Ageing, Regional Tranformation) Midterm Conference

DART is an INTERREG IVC project for the exchange of experience on the demographic change in Europe. 13 regions from 11 countries – all affected by declining and ageing – are co-operating to benchmark, identify and transfer appropriate solutions for dealing with demographic change. The project partners will identify good practices which strengthen the economy and which concern educational as well as health care and social services in each region. The objective of the DART project is to make political recommendations to regional and European stakeholders and raise public and political awareness with regard to declining and ageing regions. The first results of the project will be presented at the midterm conference.

- Workshop on developing intelligent user interfaces for e-accessibility

The workshop will explore the applicability of different modalities of interaction (speech, gesture, haptic interface etc.) and investigate ways to develop intelligent adaptation systems that meet accessibility criteria and can personalize interfaces according to the range of abilities of the user. A particular focus will be given on interoperability though the adherence to standards for accessibility such as WAI-ARIA and ISO standards. Deadline for the submission of papers - 30th November 2011.

- 1st DECODER Workshop on brain computer interfaces for the detection of consciousness in non-responsive patients

DECODER is a FP7 project that deploys Brain-Computer-Interfaces (BCI) for the detection of consciousness in non-responsive patients. The DECODER team develops an assessment battery that supports an exact diagnosis of the state of consciousness by a variety of auditory, visual, tactile and mental stimulation paradigms. The response of the patient to these stimulation methods is evaluated using modern imaging technologies. With the developed hard- and software, the risk of misdiagnosis in non-responsive patients (currently estimated up to 40 %) shall be significantly lowered. In addition, a simple communication device which can be used by patients even in a minimal conscious state is developed. DECODER started in February 2010. At the workshop, the DECODER team is happy to present the first promising results to scientific and non-scientific audience. Registration for the workshop starts in January 2012.

Under the theme "Who is afraid of aging?" issues pertaining to the aging society are included in ISG*ISARC2012, such as quality of life with leisure and pleasure, home care, life-long working, retrofitting existing buildings and infrastructures, and the associated new technologies, such as ICT, automation and robotics. We start from the rights and needs of the aging person living and working in built environments. In the last week of June in the European Year for Active Aging 2012 the world conference of the ISG, International Society for Gerontechnology will take place in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. This year in cooperation with the ISARC, International Symposium of Automation and Robotics in Construction.

- Celebrating diversity: The 8th World Congress on Active Ageing

This world congress will celebrate the diversity of ageing, the benefits and availability of physical activity and exercise opportunities for those entering old age. It is especially targeted to those in the transitional phase with a highlight on the oldest and frailest population. Scientists, practitioners and experts from a range of professional interests and disciplines will come together to promote Active Ageing. The congress will be of interest to those working in the biological, behavioural and social sciences as well as the fields of medicine, physical and recreational therapy, health, sport and exercise sciences, health education, leisure and recreation and the social and caring services. The five-day congress themes will focus on active ageing in the prevention and self-management of the conditions associated with old age: cognitive functioning and dementia; neurological and musculoskeletal conditions; falls, fractures and bone health; and cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. Please note that the abstract submission deadline is 31 January 2012. The early registration deadline is March 2012.
