Background Acrylamide (AA), an industrial chemical and byproduct of food preparation, is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a probable cancer causing agent. In 2002, AA was discovered in carbohydrate-rich foods commonly consumed in Europe. AA is also found in tobacco smoke and in some occupational settings. In the body, AA is converted to glycidamide (GA), an epoxide chemical with harmful properties that also has been classified by the IARC as a probable cause of cancer. There is growing evidence that high intake of AA may be associated with hormonal cancers in women.
Methods and Responsibilities Using prospectively collected dietary, smoking and occupational exposure information in 368,010 women, the student will investigate AA exposure in relation to the risk of endometrial and epithelial ovarian cancers in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. Exposure will be assessed in two ways: from detailed dietary questionnaires, and with the use of biomarkers.
This is a 4-year pre-doctoral fellowship that will lead to a PhD degree from a university. The student will be expected to perform statistical analyses of associations between AA and GA exposure and endometrial and ovarian cancers, and also investigate exposure determinants of high AA and GA biomarkers levels in healthy control women.
The position does not involve direct laboratory work, but the student must be able to liase between the laboratory and epidemiologists. The student will be expected to work at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and perform statistical analyses of cohort and nested case-control data, to learn epidemiologic methods to support the project, and to publish the results in high-quality peer reviewed journals. The student should have a good command of English, and should have a background (such as a Masters or degree) and/or experience in biostatistics or statistics

grup està integrat per un grup multidisciplinari de professionals entre els que destaquen epidemiòlegs, estadístics, nutricionistes, informàtics, biòlegs moleculars, especialistes en genètica i personal de suport a la recerca. L'estratègia científica del grup es basa en reconèixer que el càncer és un procés complex en el que actuen múltiples factors ambientals i genètics i que per avançar amb el coneixement científic sobre la relació causal entre l'exposició alimentaria i altres factors ambientals i el càncer, és necessari un punt de vista innovador que inclou simultàniament la combinació dels instruments clàssics de l'epidemiologia, amb l'ús de marcadors bioquímics i biològics d'exposició, com també marcadors de susceptibilitat genètica. L'estudi de la interacció dels factors ambientals amb els genètics és una peça clau de la etiopatogènia. El grup lidera a nivell de l'EPIC Europa les investigacions sobre càncer gàstric i d�
�adenocarcinoma d'esòfag, participa amb grups d'investigació sobre càncer de pulmó, càncer de pròstata i càncer de bufeta, i s'està posicionant com a centre de referència internacional en etiopatogènia del càncer gàstric. Addicionalment, desenvolupa notòries línies d'investigació relacionades amb el càncer de pàncrees co-liderant un Consorci Internacional d'estudis cas-control de càncer de Pàncrees (PanC4) i representant al EPIC en el Consorci Internacional sobre Estudis de Cohort sobre Càncer de Pàncrees (PANSCAN).
