PhD Position in Microbial Biotechnology

Short description:
Microbial biotechnology and its industrial applications in biomedicine: development of products of interest for our health, especially medicine and other applications.

PhD project outline:

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to study complex enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of medically important antibiotics and other compounds of industrial importance. We are exploring the activity of complex enzymatic systems from selected microorganisms that mediate intriguing biosynthetic steps with the aim of engineering novel pathways leading to advanced industrial processes and/or novel biologically active compounds. Metabolic/biosynthetic engineering and synthetic biology approaches will be applied for this purpose. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with an industrial partner. Applicants with background in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology or related science disciplines who are interested in interdisciplinary research are particularly welcomed.

The selected candidate will be working within a newly established research group at the Instituto de Biomedicina y Biotecnología (IBB), University of Cantabria (Santander, Spain), in the scope of the recently established "Augusto González Linares (AGL)" program at the IBB institute (University of Cantabria, Santander, Spain), funded by the University of Cantabria, Grupo Sodercan and an industrial partner.

Requirements
• Degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or Microbiology, or related biological disciplines
• Excellent communication skills, teamwork and strong self-motivation with the ability to interact well with industrial/academic partners are desired
• Fluent in Spanish and English

Conditions offered and required documentation:
The chosen candidate will be offered the following:
