A four year PhD Studentship to develop new methods for bio-sensing based on chemically modified DNA
is available to a highly motivated candidate as part the
joint PhD Programme between the University of Liverpool(UK) and CIC biomaGUNE in San Sebastián (Spain). The
student will be registered at the University of Liverpool.
The project will be jointly supervised by Dr Valery Pavlov (San Sebastián) and Dr Andy Bates and Prof Rick Cosstick (both at Liverpool) and will involve the chemical
functionalisation of DNA and its application to a variety of new methods for bio-sensing.
The successful applicant will work on the design and chemical synthesis of modified
DNA and study its properties with regard to: binding to aptamer targets, conjugation to proteins/enzymes and its potential use as a biocatalyst. It is planned that the first and last years of study will be spent at Liverpool, with the student based in San Sebastián for the
middle 2 years. Candidates should have an outstanding academic record, be open to
learning new techniques and preferably hold a Master degree in relevant area of
Chemistry or Biology. Strong candidates with a Bachelor degree will also be considered.
The position is funded for four years, starting before the end of 2013 and is open to
applicants from all EU member states.
