This call is one of 31 from pre-selected supervisors at UiT through the "Arctic MSCA-IF program" (uit.no/afu/arcticmsca/supervisors). Successful candidates will be invited to Tromsø (travel and accommodation expenses covered) for a two-days MSCA-IF symposium on June 1-2, 2016. The candidates present their past research achievements, discuss future plans with their potential supervisor and learn how to write a successful MSCA-IF application. Together with the supervisor, the selected candidates start developing their MSCA-IF application towards the MSCA-IF deadline September 14th 2016.
In this call we search for talented, young researchers within the field of Neural Stem Cell Biology as described by Dr. Arranz:
Mesenchymal-to-neural transition? A novel therapeutic approach for neurodegenerative disorders
The increase in life expectancy is generating aging societies with a remarkable increase in age-related diseases. Stem cells provide the source for replenishing mature cells in the organism throughout its life whilst maintaining the stem cell pool itself. These abilities assure tissue regeneration but must be finetuned regulated as their imbalance may contribute to aging, age-related diseases and cancer. How stem cells decide depends not only on cell-intrinsic regulators but also on extracellular signals received from their surrounding microenvironment. Our research focusses on these processes that regulate stem cell behaviour. We specifically pay attention to the identification of novel cross-talk mediators to provide therapeutic targets of potential clinical interest. In the present project, we will characterize the relationship between bone marrow (BM) mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and neural stem/precursor cells (NPCs), and apply this knowledge for treatment of two neurod
egenerative disorders: Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis. The project will comprise two main objectives: 1) Definition of the differentiation potential and in vivo functional replacement of NPCs and/or their derivatives by adult BM MSCs upon neural damage. 2) Novel treatment of neurodegenerative disorders targeting neural alterations but founded on the biology of MSC. The project will build upon novel concepts and will use a multidisciplinary state-of-the-art approach from stem cell pathophysiology to molecular medicine, to develop a new noninvasive therapy with strong translational potential for patients. To this end, the postdoctoral fellow will require strong background in the pathophysiology of NPCs and will contribute to the establishment of this new research line in my lab.
Send your CV, and describe your background contribution to this project (max 2 pages) to ArcticMSCA@uit.no within March 11 2016.
