UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Health Sciences, has a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position available. The position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is a fixed term position for a period of 3 years. The main objective of the appointment is to qualify for work in senior academic positions. No one may be appointed to more than one fixed term period as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The position's affiliation
The Faculty of Health Sciences has approximately 800 staff members, 280 phd-students and 2500 students. The Faculty of Health Sciences is divided into seven departments.

More than 200 staff members from all over the world have their workplace at the Department of Medical Biology (IMB). The department consists of 11 research groups concentrated on fundamental biomedical research problems, including research on various cancer forms, cardiovascular diseases, the body's immune system and anti-biotic resistance.

IMB provides education for students studying programmes in medicine, dentistry, biomedical laboratory sciences, biomedicine and pharmacy.

The position is organized within the recently appointed Stem Cell Aging and Cancer Research Group. The group aims at understanding the complex interactions of the mutant haematopoietic stem cell with its bone marrow niche, and their potential contribution to disease development of haematopoietic malignancies. Our goal is the identification of novel therapeutic targets of potential clinical interest. We use a variety of state-of-the-art techniques, including novel mouse genetic tools, stem cells, omics and advanced imaging. Our group has a broad international network and strengthens translational research through established collaborations with the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN). Some of our research in recent years (Arranz et al, 2014, Nature; Sanchez-Aguilera et al, 2014, Cell Stem Cell; Arranz et al, 2012, Cell Cycle; Herrera-Marchan et al, 2012, Nature Communications).

The position's field of research/field of work
Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a highly aggressive haematopoietic malignancy often associated with poor response to chemotherapy and outcome. It has been proposed that the presence of mutations in at least two genes that specifically confer a survival advantage to the haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) and impede its further differentiation is required for AML development. This suggestion is based on the fact that oncogenes that confer a survival advantage to the HSC and are frequently mutated in human AML are only able to induce myeloproliferative neoplasms in mouse models but not the transition to AML. Indeed, this indicates that these lesions are insufficient to cause AML and suggests that other factors must participate in the process. Until recently the focus has been on the search for additional genetic mutations required for development of AML with little consideration of the bone marrow HSC niche. The successful candidate will contribute to test the novel hypothesis that
specific disturbances on the bone marrow HSC niche might cooperate to drive AML. Further project details will be directly discussed with the applicants.

Qualification requirements
For appointment as Postdoctoral Fellow, the applicant requires:
• Norwegian doctoral degree in the subject area concerned or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree

Applicants should have a strong background in haematopoiesis and the HSC field, including FACS immunophenotype and functional assays of self-renewal, proliferation and differentiation both ex vivo and in vivo, i.e. transplantation. Experience with basic methods in molecular and cell biology, including extraction and sequencing of DNA/RNA, and immunohistochemistry, are also required. Experience with mouse models of haematopoietic diseases and some knowledge of the HSC niche will be an advantage.

We are seeking highly motivated scientists with a PhD and at least two first name-author publications in the haematopoietic field. In the evaluation of the applicants, scientific publications, as well as skills in the techniques listed above will be emphasized. Please provide two references.

Emphasis shall be placed on personal suitability.

Working conditions
The working hours shall be utilised for research, research-related activities and research administration.

The successful applicant must be willing to engage himself/herself in the ongoing development of his/her discipline and the university as a whole.

The employee may be given teaching obligations equivalent to 10% of the position. Appointment for more than one fixed term period as a postdoctoral fellow at the same institution is not permitted. Regulations concerning redundancy pay cannot be included in the fixed term work contract.

The remuneration for this position is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352.
A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
