Workplace: Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden

Scope: Full-time,funded position

Job Commencement: As soon as possible

Project description: Obesity, diabetes and associated metabolic disease are becoming one of the most significant issues affecting modern health and medicine. Central to this is adipose tissue. No longer considered merely a passive energy store, adipose tissue is fast emerging as a far more complex and heterogeneous tissue than previously believed. Despite this, much about fundamental adipose biology remains poorly understood.

Our group investigates the turnover and maintenance of adipose tissue, using creative and pioneering approaches to answer the fundamentals of adipose biology in humans (Spalding et al.,2008, Nature; Arner et al., 2011, Nature; Ryden et al., 2015, Cell Metabolism). How adipocytes respond and contribute to metabolic disease is investigated at a single cell and whole organ level. Broad established clinical partnerships enable our work to focus on primary human tissue. The group works as part of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and the Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre; a newly formed collaboration between Karolinska Institute and Astra Zeneca, providing a stimulating environment of diverse metabolic experts.
This project seeks a curious and creative scientist interested in basic cell biology, with a specialist interest in cell growth, the cell cycle and cell signaling.

Qualifications: To qualify, the applicant must have received his/her PhD within the last 4 years. Expertise in the field of cell cycle biology is required. Knowledge of immunocytochemistry, confocal microscopy, primary tissue culture and flow cytometry are an advantage. Previous experience working with adipose tissue is helpful, but not essential.
The ideal candidate should be persistent, resourceful and self motivated. Working independently is vital, however the project is heavily integrated into other projects in the lab and thus an ability to function as part of a team is required. Good English oral and writing skills are a must.
